Artist Of The Week: Grouch & Eligh

So, I stumbled across this group perusing through the  music section in Myspace and I instantly fell in love. This hip-hop duo, out of Oakland, CA is the real thing. I have not heard undergound rap being so lyrical since I first heard Immortal Technique. This duo mixes their poetic floetry with experimental beats. The beats are a combination of Jazz, Blues and straight up old school hip hop. It is hard to combine fluid hip hop with poetic lyrics and you rarely hear MC caliber and talent like that anymore anways, but it is clearly not a problem for these two. If you like Common, N.E.R.D or Blackstar you will definitly dig these guys. Their album, Say G&E, drops April 21 and I think everyone should go out and purchase a copy. For more on Grouch and Eligh hit up their myspace page www.myspace.com/thegrouchandeligh or hit up their website at www.legendarymusicnet. Trust me on this one folks, check them out! Let us know what you think.

Artist Of The Week: Nicki Minaj

If you feel that lately the rap game has been lacking in female mc’s, then look no further. Nicki Minaj is the next best thing when it comes to females in the rap game. With 2 mixtapes under her belt, A number 19 pick by VIBE magazine for why hip-hop is still alive and a record deal with rap powerhouse Lil Wayne and Young Money Entertainment, Nicki is sure to be in the game for a while. She was discovered by Fendi and featured on his street-circulating DVD that highlights new hip-hop artists The Come Up, which was put into the hands of Mr. Weezy soon after. What makes her different then lets say Foxy Brown and Lil Kim is her style. Nicki adds an element of comedy to her rhymes without downplaying the grit and grime of her flow. She is a hardhitting MC who has gained much respect within the rap game. I happen to be a huge fan who has actually met and hung out with her at one of her shows. I think if anybody is in need of a female rap fix, Nicki Minaj is where it”s at. You can listen to her on Beyonce’s Single Ladies Remix here or visit her myspace page at www.myspace.com/nickiminaj to listen to her new mixtape, Beam Me Up Scotty. I would suggest listening to Curious George which is a diss to Lil Mama, its by far my favorite track. Some of my other favorite Nicki Minaj tracks are Dead Wrong and Doin It Well with Jadakiss. Her interviews are also hilarious, so I suggest you check them out! Let me know what you think!
